Best party game apps for groups: phones and screens
Choose a party game app for your group: one TV and guest phones, one shared phone, or no TV. Compare player limits, downloads and free-plan restrictions.

Choose for the devices in your room
For eight friends with phones and one TV, shortlist Jackbox’s Quiplash 3 for comedy or Unison for a hosted quiz or party game. Guests can join both in a browser; Jackbox’s host needs the purchased game installed. With just one phone, choose Heads Up! For guests moving between rooms, consider Unison’s bingo or missions with Events.
- TV + guest phones
Everyone sees the same round; phones hold answers or controls.
- One shared phone
One person guesses while the others give clues, then swap.
- Guest phones, no TV
Use background activities with a clear briefing and finish.

Unison plan allowances
Plan allowances: Free — up to 10 players per session; Games — up to 100 players per session; Events — unlimited guests per event. Choose a game format that fits your group.
Games covers live party games, full ready-made quizzes and your own quiz questions for 24 hours from confirmed payment or while subscribed monthly, with up to 100 guests per session. Bingo, Secret Missions, Quests, Predictions, Awards, RSVP, questionnaires and guest photos require Events, with unlimited guests: buy access for one event or subscribe monthly for unlimited events. A new one-event purchase includes preparation from payment and 7 days of games after you activate the event. Events Monthly includes unlimited events while subscribed, with unlimited guests per event and 1 live event at a time. Prepare other events and collect RSVPs in parallel.
Three ways to connect your group
Start with the equipment, then check how many people can actively play. A subscription allowance and a game’s player limit are different checks.
A. One shared screen + a phone each
- Host device runs game
- TV shows the round
- Guests join on phones
Unison, Jackbox, Kahoot and AirConsole. Connect the host device to the TV; guests use a room code, link or QR code as supported.
B. One phone for the whole group
- Open Heads Up! app
- One person guesses
- Friends give clues
No TV or separate guest devices. Pass the phone between turns.
C. Guest phones without a shared screen
- Host prepares activity
- Guests open event link
- Play around the room
Unison Events: bingo, missions or predictions. Brief everyone first and announce when the activity ends.
Eight friends, one TV and no guest downloads
Quiplash 3 is a clear fit for eight people who want to write funny answers and vote: its active-player range is 3–8. The host buys and installs the game on a supported device; friends join at jackbox.tv. Extra audience members do not get the same role as the eight active players.
Unison is a fit when you want a hosted quiz, picture voting or a guessing game. The host uses a browser, guests join through the event link and the shared screen shows the round. Free includes live party games with starter sets and ready-made quizzes with their first 10 questions, for up to 10 guests per session. Full live game content and your own quiz questions are included with Games. Bingo, Secret Missions, Quests, Predictions and Awards are included with Events.
For this setup, give everyone a seat with a view of the TV and test the connection from the host device. Use a supported computer or console where the chosen product requires one.

One phone and no television: Heads Up!
Heads Up! suits a group sitting close enough to hear one another. One player holds the phone with its screen facing the clue givers, guesses the word and passes the device for the next turn. Everyone else gives clues aloud.
Install the app on the shared phone before the event and open the deck you want to use. The US iOS listing has a paid download with in-app purchases; the Android listing offers installation without an upfront price and has in-app purchases. Check your local store and the chosen deck rather than assuming every deck is included.
No guest app does not mean no host installation
- Unison: the host and guests use browsers. The host needs an account; guests do not need an app or account.
- Jackbox: guests use a browser, but the host installs and runs the purchased game on its supported platform.
- Kahoot: guests can use a browser or the app. Check the host account’s joining settings and player cap.
- AirConsole: a computer browser can be the main screen and phone browsers can be controllers. Its published Hero purchase flow uses the mobile app and an app-store subscription.
- Heads Up!: install one mobile app for the shared-phone round. The other clue givers need no device.
No shared screen: games while people mingle
Choose background activities when guests arrive at different times or move between rooms. In Unison, bingo, secret missions and predictions use guest phones and require Events. They need a host to prepare the activity and explain the rules, even when the host is not leading every turn.
For example, start a find-the-guest bingo while people meet, close it before dinner and announce the result together. Hosted quizzes, Meme Match and the other shared-screen games need a separate playing slot.
Live phone play needs internet. If the connection is unreliable, prepare a paper activity as a fallback.
More than eight players, or people who have just met?
For a larger group, look for a format where everyone can answer or vote in the same round. Unison Games allows up to 100 players per session; check the chosen game’s minimum and format too. Kahoot’s limit depends on the host’s account category and plan.
Do not treat spectator capacity as active-player capacity: Quiplash 3 still has eight active slots even when more people join its audience. AirConsole Hero permits more connections than Free, but check the chosen game’s supported player count before selecting it for your group.
For people who have just met, begin with a factual quiz or a low-pressure guessing round. Personal trivia needs shared context; a word game needs guests who are comfortable giving spoken clues. With a large room and one Heads Up! phone, people may spend more time waiting for their turn.
Choose the interaction, not just the app
- Year Off: make a private year guess on your phone and compare the results on the shared screen.
- Meme Match: choose a reaction picture and vote before the names are revealed. Preview the content for your guests.
- Odd Signal: use emoji clues, discussion and voting to work out who has the different word.
- Explain It: split into two teams and take turns giving spoken clues. Choose it when the group wants a more vocal game.
A quick equipment check before guests arrive
- Count active players, including the host if they will play. Check both the plan and the exact game.
- Open the host view on the device you will actually use. Test the TV connection and sound if your game needs it.
- Join from a second phone using the guest link or code. Confirm whether it asks for an app or account.
- Open the chosen game or deck and check what is included. A free join screen does not mean free hosting or unlocked content.
- Run one practice turn, then tell guests where to look, how to answer and when the game ends.
Common questions
What can eight friends play with phones and one TV?
Quiplash 3 supports 3–8 active players and guest browser joining, while its host needs the purchased game installed. Unison also supports this setup for hosted quizzes and party games; check the chosen game and plan. Free includes starter sets and the first 10 questions of ready-made quizzes.
Which party game apps need no guest downloads?
Unison, Jackbox, Kahoot and AirConsole support guest browser joining. Host requirements differ: Jackbox needs an installed game, and AirConsole’s published Hero purchase flow uses a mobile app. Test the complete setup before inviting guests.
What can we play with only one phone?
Heads Up! lets one person guess while the others give clues, then you pass the phone. Install the app and check the chosen deck first. Download charges and in-app purchases differ by platform and region.
Can party games work without a shared screen?
Yes. Heads Up! uses one shared phone. Unison’s bingo, missions and predictions can run on guest phones with Events. Hosted quizzes and shared-screen party games need a different setup; live browser play still needs internet.
Does AirConsole Hero mean every game supports a large group?
Hero enables more than two connected players. The active-player limit varies by game; check the game’s listing for your group size.
